What is California Proposition 65 (also known as “Prop 65”)?
Proposition 65 is a California Law that requires businesses to notify Californians about qualifying amounts of substances in the environment and/or consumer goods. Also known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, Proposition 65 was designed to assist California residents to make informed decisions about the products they purchase and the impact on their health. What substances exist in dietary supplements that would fall under Proposition 65?
Over 800 chemicals have been listed under California Proposition 65. For a complete list of substances, please visit http://oehha.ca.gov/prop65/prop65_list/Newlist.html
Why do a few of our products have this warning label?
Proposition 65 requires any company doing business in California to notify California consumers about the presence of certain substances in products the company is offering for sale in California.
How do the California warnings compare to Federal Limits?
Many chemicals, such as lead, are extremely prevalent in the environment around us (in the air, soil, water and rocks). As a result, these types of substances can be found in many plant-based foods (including those organically grown), even though these chemicals are not intentionally added to foods or nutritional supplements. Proposition 65 limits are quite stringent and do not necessarily correlate with limits expressed by other regulatory bodies, such as the FDA and WHO. For example, the Proposition 65 standard warnings for lead are 0.5 mcg, but this limit is far below the amount of lead naturally found in many fruits and vegetables grown on clean, non-contaminated soils AND is far less than the FDA’s daily intake level of 75 mcg.
Should I be concerned about the safety of these products?
Although you should always be aware and take notice of any product warning, a Proposition 65 warning does not mean that a product is unsafe. The State of California’s website states, “A Proposition 65 warning does not necessarily mean that a product is in violation of any product-safety standards or requirements.” Energetix takes every precaution possible with our vigorous testing and quality control methods to ensure that all of our products are clean, safe and effective.
